What is Anoscopy?

Anoscopy, i.e. inspection of the anus and the inside of the rectal ampulla with a single-use speculum, is the main tool that allows you to look at the mucosa of the final section of the digestive tract.

The examination is painless and harmless, it is performed routinely during a visit to a proctologist in conditions identical to those for per rectal examination.

Anoscopy is primarily used for prevention, in order to detect early dysplastic foci, i.e. changes from which anal cancer may develop in the future. This examination should be performed for all those who are in the group of patients at risk of a higher-than-usual incidence of this type of malignancy.

What is High-Resolution Anoscopy?

A more advanced variant of anoscopy is high-resolution anoscopy.

The examination consists in viewing the tissues of the anus and anal canal at very high magnification using a microscope, displayed on a computer screen.

During the examination, the doctor can stain the anal tissues and take a biopsy if necessary.

This examination should be conducted for patients in whom lesions have been found during routine anoscopy that require careful examination and verification of their extent and nature (benign or malignant) and in patients in whom malignant neoplastic lesions were diagnosed in a cytological examination in order to determine their extent and selecting the appropriate method of treatment.

What is Anal Canal Canal Cytology?

The test consists in taking a swab from the anal canal with a brush, similar to the cytology used in the prevention of cervical cancer in women.

The examination is recommended for the group of patients with an increased probability of developing anal cancer.

It can be performed during anoscopy if the observed mucosa raises any suspicion or if the patient belongs to a risk group.
