Anoscopy, i.e. inspection of the anus and the inside of the rectal ampulla with a single-use speculum, is the main tool that allows you to look at the mucosa of the final section of the digestive tract.
The examination is painless and harmless, it is performed routinely during a visit to a proctologist in conditions identical to those for per rectal examination.
Anoscopy is primarily used for prevention, in order to detect early dysplastic foci, i.e. changes from which anal cancer may develop in the future. This examination should be performed for all those who are in the group of patients at risk of a higher-than-usual incidence of this type of malignancy.
