What is urogynecological rehabilitation?

Urogynecological rehabilitation is a therapy focused on improving the deteriorated function of the pelvic floor muscles, which determine the proper functioning of the pelvic organs. It uses non-invasive and individualized methods and techniques that aim to treat and prevent various changes in the pelvic floor, such as urinary incontinence, genital prolapse, sexual dysfunctions, and proctological disorders such as constipation, fecal or gas incontinence.

The main assumptions of the therapy include:

  • Increasing awareness of one's own body by re-education of posture, and breathing and eliminating aggravating movement habits
  • Learning how to optimally contract the pelvic floor muscles
  • Incorporating the pelvic floor muscles in the stabilization necessary for everyday - improvement of endurance, strength, and synergy of phasic and tonic muscles

Manual techniques are also used to make the pelvic floor structures more flexible, to improve the blood supply, and to correct patterns and habits are consolidated to prevent the reappearance of disorders of the pelvic floor muscles.

Who should use urogynecological rehabilitation?

Urogynecological therapy is addressed to people of all ages, both women and men. It includes therapy of symptoms related to the digestive system, urinary system, and reproductive system, as well as related symptoms located outside the pelvis.

Most of the patients in our surgeries are pregnant or post-pregnant women, as well as elderly people struggling with urinary, gas, or stool incontinence. However, few people know that urogynecological therapy is also... (see more)addressed to women preparing for pregnancy, women suffering from menstrual pain, or painful intercourse. Men with erectile dysfunction, men before or after prostatectomy, and people with acute pain in the pelvis or spine also form an important group of patients.

The sooner appropriate action is taken, the greater the chance of successful treatment.
