Anal Manometry

Anal and rectal manometry (also known as anorectal manometry) is a proctological examination used to determine the strength, efficiency, and reactivity of the anal sphincters.

What is anal manometry?

This examination consists of the introduction of a special catheter into the anus. The catheter is equipped with pressure transmitters, allowing the test of the reflexes controlling the defecation process and obtaining a computer distribution of pressure in the muscles surrounding the anus both in the relaxation, as well as strain phase.

The catheter is equipped with a small balloon, which during the examination is filled to the volume that ensures the sphincter reaction. The chart showing the pressures at which clenching and laxity of the anal and rectal muscles occur is recorded in the manometer and analyzed by the doctor.

What are the indications for the performance of anorectal manometry?

Anorectal manometry should be considered if one or more of the following symptoms are present:

  • persistent, prolonged constipation
  • fecal and/or gas incontinence
  • rectal prolapse
  • suspected sphincter damage after surgery

Manometry may also be recommended by a physician as part of the diagnostics prior to performing procedures within the lower gastrointestinal tract.

What is the anorectal manometry procedure?

The patient is asked to move the lower part of the clothes down to the knees, and lie comfortably on the couch on the left side with the knees pulled up to the stomach. To reduce the patient's discomfort, the anal area is lubricated with gel before the insertion of the balloon catheter.

During the examination, the patient is asked to tighten the sphincters, relax them and try to push (push out the catheter). During the examination, the balloon in the catheter is inflated several times to check the pressure thresholds at which the patient feels the fullness of the intestines and the urge to defecate.

The examination takes about 30 minutes and is painless for the patient. The test results are discussed with the patient after the test is completed.
